HANSHI KAUFMAN’S BUDO TEACHINGS

Hanshi Kaufman has been practicing the martial way since 1957, when he began his studies on Okinawa while serving in the United States Air Force. Hanshi Kaufman is the founder and master of Hebi Ryu Budo™ – School of the Snake, developed from the roots of ancient Shaolin and Okinawan karate. He is the author of 37 books, including the world’s best-selling version of Musashi’s Book of Five Rings, Sun Tzu’s Art of War, Zen and the Art of Stickfighting, plus many more. Hanshi Kaufman is acknowledged around the world, as he continues to educate an enormous following, with a wide range of budo teachings via courses and clinics. His martial studies programs range from Hebi ryu karate, savage street self-defense—unarmed and stick, zen meditation, iaido, kenjutsu, Okinawan sai, and Taikido™ healing. All programs are designed for individual students and groups seeking to further their training and understanding of the higher aspects of martialism. Classes range from beginners to advanced students.

HEBI RYU KARATE-DO

Based on Hanshi Kaufman’s books, Musashi’s Book of Five Rings and Kata: Theory and Functionality—The Formal Exercises of Hebi Ryu Karate-do, students learn Hebi ryu karate-do as an aesthetic approach to the mastery of classical karate and the samurai warrior mentality associated with it. Though self-defense is an aspect of the martialist system, a deeper meaning of the art and science of karate becomes apparent in the early stages of training. The philosophies expounded in Hanshi’s books are explored with connections to all aspects of the warrior’s life. Hebi ryu karate-do is an ongoing study. Beginners and advanced students, individuals, and groups will be considered for study. Musashi’s concepts from the Book of Five Rings, of which Hanshi Kaufman is an undisputed authority, are used throughout and follow the methodology of Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and No-thing.

HEBI RYU STICKFIGHTING SELF-DEFENSE

Students learn the skills needed to wield a walking stick, cane, or an umbrella with appropriate dexterity to fend off unarmed and armed attackers. Excellent for everyone. Based on Hanshi’s books, Musashi’s Book of Five Rings and Zen and the Art of Stickfighting, the course covers all aspects of training, starting with proper stick handling and technique development for realistic defense maneuvers against single and multiple attack situations. This course of instruction is exceptionally valuable to man and women of all ages with no martial arts skills, as well as advanced students with any martial discipline and takes into consideration a student’s physical challenges.

TAIKIDO: MOVING ZEN HEALING MEDITATION

Taikido™ is an ongoing exercise program that enhances a participant’s overall mental and physical condition, resulting in a higher level of personal energy and serenity. Using ancient principles taught in Hanshi’s book, Taikido: Moving Zen Healing Meditation, the student quickly learns the value of slow movement to release the incredible amount of ki and ch’i energy that resides within. The ability to develop intense focus on matters at hand is brought forth, enabling practitioners to overcome all of life’s obstacles: external or self-imposed, physical and mental. As student’s progress, they are taught to create instant meditations to alleviate any conditions they may be dealing with.

HANSHI KAUFMAN’S SAVAGE STREET SELF-DEFENSE

Courses are structured for content to include people of all ages: women, men, and children: individually and as a group. Beginning with the rudiments of safety consciousness, Hanshi develops the required skills for dealing with unarmed front, rear, sitting, ground, and stairwell/elevator attacks. Students who successfully finish the fundamentals course are invited to join advanced classes that address armed attacks, including sticks, knives, multiple assailants, etc. Nothing is left to chance in this course of instruction and all aspects are explored, including the use of personal body weapons, as well as hands and feet. This is a NOFA course based on The Hanshi’s Guide to Ultimate Self-defense. You will be dangerous to offenders when you complete this method of study.

HEBI RYU IAIDO – ZEN AND THE SAMURAI SWORD

Iaido meditation approaches the exquisite functionality of drawing the sword with the intent of developing individual perfection of the soul. It is the most demanding martial art in that it has no practical application other than developing poise, balance, and serenity. Classical forms are studied with their variations using a practice sword, bokken, and evolve into a live bladed katana. This is an ongoing study.

HEBI RYU KENJUTSU – PRACTICAL SAMURAI COMBATIVES

Kenjutsu is the art of applying the techniques learned through iaido in a practical format that includes authentic function, performance, and execution. Following the teachings of Musashi, the skills developed are second to none in the world of martial arts.

MASTERING OKINAWAN SAI

Students learn the correct application of wielding the Okinawan Sai, an ancient weapon originally used for defense against swords, sticks, spears, etc. The course focuses on fundamentals leading up to actual combative applications against unarmed and armed assailants. Lessons are structured on Hanshi’s book, Mastering Okinawan Sai.
