The Hanshi knew the park very well and had no problem leaving the immediate area. As he ran he was able to think clearly and couldn’t believe what he had just witnessed and gotten into. He would have to report the incident to the authorities before a manhunt started, but first he had to get out of the park. The situation was out of control and he knew it would be smart to have the press around when he went to the police station to prevent any more nonsense as a result of no one knowing what the hell had happened. First though, get to a safe area, wait, and then get home to call Randall.
He moved cautiously to get a better perspective of what was happening around him. The area was suddenly very quiet except for random voices shouting directives. Soon the entire park would be filled with police cars, ambulances, sirens, dogs, and reporters, as well as park people. He wouldn’t be able to get out of the park without some difficulty. Better to hide until things calmed down a bit. Keeping himself unseen, he edged up to the iron rail of a path leading away from the falls that dropped into a gully. There was a cave he knew about, that had actually been sniffed out by Thatcher, his dog, on one of her runs, and which was probably once used by the Parks Department for storage. As he neared it he saw nothing, entered and settled down.
He wondered if Sharon had walked Thatcher before she went to work.
Ramon never ran so fast in his life. He was in the car screaming at Joe to take off before Joe even knew he was there. “Get the fuck outta here. Don’t ask questions, just fuckin’ go. The whole park just blew up. I can’t believe what happened. Lenny got popped, Frankie got popped, Freddie got busted and some crazy motherfucker was runnin’ around swingin’ swords and fucked up two cops.” It all came out in one breath.
Joe said nothing. He hit the pedal and the tires screeched as the car shot ahead. As they sped up Central Park West he asked where there were supposed to go. He noticed that Ramon was not carrying the attaché case with the money or the drugs.
“Where’s the dough and the shit?” he asked.
“I got no idea but some motherfucker’s gonna answer questions bigger than shit.”
“No shit! What do you mean some fucker with swords? Who do you think it was?
“I got no idea. All I know is that the cat may have saved my life. I gotta do something for him though; throw him some bread or something. First I gotta find out what the fuck happened,” Ramon wailed.
“How can you do the guy solid if you don’t know who he is? Besides the fuck killed two cops with a sword? You go be nice to him. Sounds like a whack job.”
“No,” replied Ramon. “There was something strange about the dude. He seemed to know what he was doing. You should see the way he cooled an old dick I used to know. He threw a sword right through his hand into his stomach like one of those karate movie guys. And then the cat was so fast that he was right up another cop’s ass. Meanwhile everybody is shooting at each other and this cat just goes and gets his sword and walks away. Fuckin’ scary, man!”
Joe thought for a moment then said, “You think the guy just fell into the shit? Your good luck! If the thing was a set up then who made the deal with the cops in the first place? Besides, if this guy did two cops then he isn’t in any position to get a present from anybody. He probably won’t get out of the park alive. Fucking cops and sirens and shit. So where are we going?”
Ramon looked out the window pensively. “Just drive!” he said.
