The cops waited in place while they kidded each other about feeling like cowboys. Ballners, at the top of the falls knelt behind a tree to cover any action that would occur below. Martine Alvarez was about 30 feet away on the other side of a small ravine giving both of them the opportunity to attack in a pincer movement. The entire area was shrouded in trees and bushes and no one was easily visible to another, which was a major tactical error. Only a couple of the cops knew where anyone else was and no one had really gone out of their way to examine the pictures of the alleged perps with the exception of Ramon Alvarez, whom they all knew anyway.
Ballners and Martine knew whom they were looking for because of the set up and the other cops were to move only when Ballners gave the signal. The plan was mediocre at best with no contingency for any sudden change. They certainly weren’t following Sun Tzu’s Art of War for this operation.
Ramon approached from the north side of the hill where no one was waiting and no one could see him. Lenny and Fred were walking along the lakeside path to the bottom of the falls. They had been told by Ramon to wait at the bench until contacted. However, two overzealous plainclothes cops, Ginzburg and Rizzuto, spotted them first and smiled at each other knowing they were destined for greatness. Lenny and Fred had no idea who they were to meet and as they neared the bench, Ginzburg and Rizzuto began to move.
At that same instant, the Hanshi came over the rise at the top of the falls. Ramon crept closer to the action, still unseen. Other cops saw the Hanshi and figured that he was plainclothes and working with them. Ballners whispered over to Martine loud enough for the Hanshi to hear, “Who the fuck is this Asshole?” She indicated that she didn’t hear him and started to move closer to her partner so he repeated it, louder. The Hanshi immediately turned in Ballners direction and decided to walk away thinking there was no sense looking for shit if you didn’t have to. Martine saw the Hanshi move and started across the open space as if the new face was a threat to her partner. The Hanshi saw her move towards him gun in hand. At the same time, Ginzburg yelled for Lenny and Fred to freeze. No one identified themselves. Ballners cursed and started towards the action at the bottom of the falls while reaching for his gun.
The Hanshi, seeing Ballners and Martine move, slid into a position behind a tree figuring he fell into something that he didn’t need to be involved with. At the same time Ballners yelled, “Get the fuck out of here, Asshole” to which the Hanshi replied “Asshole? Hey Fool, do I look like your father?” and turned to walk away.
Martine moved directly at the Hanshi while yelling towards the bottom of the falls. Other cops were converging and covering their asses at the same time. Ramon watched with amazement as Lenny and Fred began to scuffle with Ginzburg and Rizzuto. Lenny broke away and started firing the TEC-9 wildly into the rocks and the trees. Ginzburg hit the ground and nailed Lenny with a bullet in the face. He went down, dead. During all of this, Rizzuto slammed his piece across Fred’s head. Ginzburg started jumping around and freaking out while bullets flew in all directions.
Frankie, hearing the commotion, came up on Ramon and saying “Hey,” scared him. Ramon turned and fired, instantly killing him with two shots right to the heart. Frankie had a quizzical look on his face as he went down as Ramon swore. Ballners pointed his piece towards the Hanshi who instantly threw his sai, nailing the detective’s hand into his abdomen. Ballners screamed and at the same time his gun went off. Martine screamed and began tossing wild shots toward the top of the falls where the Hanshi had been. He sidestepped and executed a flying kick to her neck before she could take aim and fire again. As she fell off the ledge onto the rocks below her gun discharged and she shot herself in the crotch. Ballners kept screaming trying to understand what happened to his hand and stomach while the Hanshi jumped back over and retrieved his sai. The other cops, seeing what happened and being surrounded by gunfire, stayed on the ground firing wildly in the direction of the Hanshi who immediately disappeared into the woods as the sun broke through the clouds.
Ramon realizing he had killed his good-luck charm ran out of the park cursing. He stopped for a brief moment and looked back wondering who the bald-headed guy was. “Shit, that motherfucker saved my life. I owe him.”
The whole thing took less than ten seconds and was witnessed in its entirety by one Victor Chu, a homeless drunkard and ex-MIT physics research fellow.
