I’m happy to tell you that I’ve had the pleasure of receiving a wonderful book written by Hanshi Stephen Kaufman, and his book is titled Zen and the Art of Stickfighting, published by Contemporary Books.
Because of my expertise in the area of Filipino Stickfighting, it is my pleasure to give an opinion about his book. I would just like to say that the author has done an incredible task of demonstrating how a stick, cane, or umbrella can be used as a weapon for self-defense against an attacker, or against a number of attackers, because these mentioned weapons are definitely the equalizer, especially for women and senior citizens.
Since the beginning of time, mankind has used the stick to defend himself against wild animals that came close to his domain and against other enemy tribes as well; so, over the years mankind has established somewhat of a relationship with the stick. We can use the stick to help us walk, especially when we are at an advanced age, and it is a great deterrent against an animal that wants to harm us.
But the simple stick is most useful as a weapon of self-defense. So it is only natural that we should try learn how to effectively use the simple stick-walking cane or umbrella as an effective device to assist us against an attacker, or even against a small group of attackers, because having this kind of weapon is a real equalizer, and they are very practical weapons which are inexpensive, too. Zen and the Art of Stickfighting is an excellent resource of information about stick-fighting for self-defense, and this book has been designed so that any individual can practice the unique techniques described in the manual and can be done either alone at home or with a training partner, as well.
